How long does it take to train my dog?

How long is a piece of string.  It depends on how much time you put into it and what you want it to do.  Generally dogs being trained residentially take two to three weeks for the basic heel work on and off the lead, sit, stay, return etc.  This needs to be carried on my you when the dog returns home.

Dogs coming for lessons usually come for one hour per week for about six weeks.  Although there are exceptions both longer and shorter, this is because it takes longer to teach you than it does the dog.  Gun dog training to an advanced level takes approximately four months.

Do I need to make an appointment?

Yes.  The kennels are for training as well as boarding and if clients could come whenever they wanted, I would not be able to take other dogs out training.  Appointments are needed to view the kennels, drop off and collect dogs, and for training lessons.

What will you feed my dog while I am away?

Steve stocks his own brand of dog food which is a very high quality complete food.  This is also available to buy.

What are the opening times of the kennels?

Appointments can be made between 9.00am - 4.30pm weekdays and 9.30am - 1.00pm Saturdays.  The kennels are closed for appointments on Sundays.

Is my dog too old to be trained?

The old saying "you can't teach an old dog new tricks" was obviously written by somebody who didn't train dogs!   They can be trained but may take longer as bad habits are more fully ingrained.

I have a puppy - what age should I start training it?

The best age is 5-6 months.  Prior to that, you should do only house training and social skills.  Puppies should be allowed to be puppies.  To help you to understand how to prepare your puppy for it's future training you can book a half hour puppy session.

What should a dog be able to do for you to call it "trained"?

Come when called, sit when told, heel when told, on and off the lead, ignore distractions e.g.. other dogs, livestock etc. and get in and out of the car on commands and not jumping up.  This would make a dog to be proud of and one you will enjoy owning.

Do you use physical punishment in your training?

Training dogs is like training children.  The punishment should fit the crime.  The dog should learn by the tone of voice if you are happy or upset with it.  Steve trains dogs - he doesn't break them.

Why should I use a professional trainer instead of going to training classes?

With no disrespect intended to training classes, you cannot stop a dog chasing cars, bikes etc. in a church hall or an enclosed field.  To train a dog properly you need to set up certain situations.  Also in a large class you may get five minutes individual attention.  All dogs are different and need a tailored training programme to suit their personality and learning capability.  A good professional trainer is at the end of the telephone in between lessons as this is his only occupation.  There is an old saying "jack of all trades, masters of none".

Why should I have my dog trained by you?

Because dog training for Steve is a way of life, not just a business.  One of the things that makes a good trainer is the amount of different dogs he has had through his hands.  Steve has trained hundreds of dogs for various types of work and pets.  There are few problems that he will not have seen before in some shape or form.

Why can't I train my own gun dog?

There is no reason why not - except time, time and more time.  Also if it goes wrong, which it can easily do, it isn't really practical to start again with a new one.  Cheaper in the long run to get someone else to do it who thoroughly understands the job.
