Introduction:

Steve has listed here his five "top dogs" for pets using the criteria of trainability, temperament and intelligence.  This opinion is based on the average dog; of course there are variations and anomalies within every breed.  Before buying a puppy however, why not try the many rescue centres which have excellent dogs, who are often there through no fault of their own.

bullet

German Shepherd.  Highly intelligent dogs which need training from an early age before bad habits and aggression can become ingrained.  Need human socialising thoroughly and early.  They aren't novice handler dogs, but are loyal and extremely rewarding when handled correctly.  However, you do need a sense of humor to train these dogs!

bullet

Lurcher.  Ideal family pets, these dogs are vastly underrated being associated with poachers etc.  Depending on the cross of the dog, most are readily trained and are usually extremely placid with people.  Kind and patient with children, they will happily lie in comfort all day, but are keen for exercise when offered;  they won't tire out easily!   The only must with these dogs is that they should be stock and steadiness trained to avoid them giving chase.

bullet

Border Terrier.  Very "game" dog, full of life and interest.  Cheeky characters, but if you get a good one, quiet and sensible as well as rough and tough.  Very patient with children poking and pulling and are bright enough to make training a fairly simple process.  Adapt easily to owners way of life.

bullet

Labrador Retriever (show bred)Love children and make very affectionate pets.  This can however become a disadvantage as their love of playing with children results in them picking up bad habits easily, which can put obstacles in the way of training.  This aside, these dogs are very intelligent, easy to train and are willing to please their owners.

bullet

English Springer Spaniels (show bred).  Nice kind temperament, very willing to be trained and eager to please.  Make good family pets and are a good choice for less experienced handlers.
